Evaluation of organisation’s project maturity

Challenge

Many organisations are aware of the benefits of proper project management and have implemented appropriate mechanisms as well as gathered the necessary experience in that field.

It is normal however for the scale, complexity and value of the projects conducted to grow, and for groups of interrelated sub-projects to emerge. At that point the company’s officers are often forced to ask if their organisation is executing its projects in an efficient manner, and whether it is able to cope with the growing number of projects successfully. They feel they need to learn the organisation’s current level of project maturity.

Carrywater’s solution

We evaluate the organisation’s project maturity based on the most recent standards applicable, such as the Organizational Project Management Maturity Model (OPM3)®, the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI), or OGC P3M3.

In the course of the evaluation process, our research includes the following aspects:

  • whether the project and programme management processes are being followed and how,
  • whether the projects are managed in line with the agreed methodology,
  • whether the organisation successfully completes its projects and programmes,
  • whether the managers have a responsive or proactive approach to work,
  • whether project schedules and budgets are exceeded,
  • whether project deliverables have the expected quality.

We determine the current level of maturity. If it does not meet the expectations, we recommend actions aimed at achieving the desired one.

We also offer a separate service of increasing the organisation’s project maturity level, as part of which Carrywater proposes developing a detailed action plan aimed at raising the organisation’s level of maturity, as well as the optional training.

Business value

The outcome of our work is an executive report on the organisation’s ability to cope with the growing number of complex project and our opinion on a need for any actions aimed at increasing its project maturity. The company’s leaders learn about the availability of enhancements that would allow attaining objectives set for their projects, programmes or project portfolios more efficiently, and thus minimise the risk of their failure.

Deliverables

Depending on the scope agreed, our involvement usually produces the following deliverables:
